KAHULUI — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is partnering with the County of Maui by matching -- up to $30,000 per year -- the County's new program of supporting sewage truck pump-outs for commercial vessels at Ma‘alaea Small Boat Harbor. This interim measure will be replaced by a multiple sewage pump-out facility that DLNR proposes to develop in the next several years. DLNR is seeking $2.6 million for the ultimate construction of the sewage pump out facility in the current legislative session. “In addition to operating and managing small boat harbors, we are also responsible for protecting our treasured ocean ecosystems, and we recognize that Maui’s commercial and recreational boaters share this concern for their natural resources,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “We have been diligently pursuing state and federal funds to take care of the numerous needs of the harbors to make long overdue repairs, replace outdated cesspools as required by the EPA, repair electrical systems, implement accessibility improvements as required by a federal ADA consent decree, and we are finally beginning to see a turnaround,” Young said. “We cannot make capital improvements at harbors without legislative approval. As an interim measure, we are supporting the county program of supporting truck pump-out services at Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor,” Young said. The Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor is located on the south central coast of Maui, and serves both recreational and commercial boaters. Its facilities include 30 berths for boats along the south mole that are tied to finger piers, and 61 moorings for boats that are tied "bow/stern" along the north and west marginal wharves, harbor office, dry dock and boat ramp. DLNR’s Boating Division also leases land to house a restaurant and boat club. # # # For more information, contact: |
