DLNR Closes Polihale Park and Kalalau Trail
Due To Bad Weather

KEKAHA, KAUA`I — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed Polihale State Park and the Kalalau Trail on the island of Kaua‘i because of severe weather and dangerous conditions.

Polihale State Park is located at the end of a five-mile long dirt road from the former Mana Village, off Kaumuali'i Highway (Highway 50). Heavy rainfall has made the access road and use of the park facilities hazardous due to flooding.

The trail head for the 11-mile Kalalau Trail is located at the end of Kuhio Highway (Hwy. 56) in Ha'ena State Park. Heavy rainfall has made the trail itself very slippery and dangerous.

Yesterday, DLNR suspended issuance of camping permits for all State Park facilities on Kaua`i.

"We are asking members of the public to refrain from entering Polihale and the Kalalau Trail for their own safety," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. "Normal use of these facilities and issuing of permits can resume after the rains subside and conditions stabilize."
