DLNR Closes Malaekahana And Kahana Parks
On O'ahu Due To More Severe Weather And Flooding

HONOLULU — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed the Malaekahana State Recreation Area and Ahupuaa O Kahana State parks in windward O‘ahu for the second time in a week, due to renewed severe weather and flooding at the parks.

"Overnight these two popular windward parks have experienced the most recent downpour that has also affected windward communities, especially in Punalu‘u and Hau‘ula, and so we are closing them today to protect public safety," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

DLNR's Division of State Parks is suspending issuance of camping permits for both Malaekahana State Recreation Area and Kahana Valley State Park until the severe weather subsides.

"We advise the public to avoid trails or streams during the stormy conditions due to dangers from flash flood," said Peter Young, DLNR Chairperson. "People should not attempt to cross high, swift flowing water on roadways," said Young.

“DLNR teams are assessing damage in the windward area, as well as monitoring conditions of streams and hillsides statewide,” he added.
