KAILUA-KONA— The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to an information “talk story”session from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19 at the shoreline area of Anaeho‘omalu Bay in the North Hawaii District. This informal public forum is being presented by staff from DLNR’s Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and Division of Aquatic Resources to provide information and education to the public on the administrative rules and regulations which apply to the bay. Also invited to speak and answer questions is Marc Rice, a science teacher at Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) in Waimea. Rice has studied endangered green sea turtles in other countries and presently directs the turtle study program for the school, meanwhile working closely with National Marine Fisheries Service. The focus of the forum will be on protecting aquatic resources, endangered species and saltwater sports fishing. Puako-Anaeho‘omalu Fish Replenishment Area is one of nine fishery management areas along the West Hawaii coastline where fishing is permitted, but fish feeding, collecting aquatic life for aquarium purposes and use of lay nets is prohibited. For more information, contact DLNR Officer Verl Nakama at DLNR-Enforcement North Hawaii district office, at (808) 887-6196.
