DLNR Completes New Comfort Station
At Kaumahina Wayside

KAHULUI — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has completed construction of a new comfort station at Kaumahina Wayside along the Hana Highway.

"These improvements are part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's ongoing efforts to upgrade our state parks statewide and to ensure accessibility, safety and comfort for all residents and visitors who use the parks," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

This facility replaces the comfort station that was destroyed by fire on March 10, 1998.

Arisumi Brothers constructed the new comfort station and new parking area, new entry park entry gate, new individual wastewater system, drainage improvements, and accessibility improvements, including a new accessible observation deck, picnic tables, pathway and railing improvements, and signage. Project cost was $855, 240.

The Board of Land and Natural Resources last month set the park open hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The park gate will be closed overnight to prevent vandalism.
Kaumahina Wayside is located along Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 28 miles east of Kahului Airport—a two-hour drive. It is a forested rest stop on 7.8 acres, with picnicking, showy exotic plants and scenic viewpoint of northeast Maui coastline.
