DLNR Closes Aiea Loop Trail

HONOLULU — In the interest of public safety, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has closed the Aiea Loop Trail until further notice. DLNR State Parks staff have received reports of trail damage and unsafe conditions.

Parks staff will further assess the situation once current severe weather conditions have diminished, and determine what repairs might be required.

“We are asking hikers and mountain bikers to observe posted closure signs and refrain from entering the trail which is accessed through Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

“We advise the public to avoid going on mountain trails and stream areas while heavy rain, thunderstorm and flash flood conditions persist in the islands. Please keep safe and avoid potential danger from these situations,” he said.

Keaiwa Heiau and the picnic grounds as well as the campgrounds will remain open while the loop trail is being restored.

The 384.5 acre Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area and 4.8 mile Aiea Loop Trail, located at the end of Aiea Heights Drive in Aiea, are popular attraction for hikers, mountain bikers, campers and joggers.
