Muliwai Trail, Waimanu Valley
HILO — Department of Land and Natural Resource (DLNR) has reopened the Muliwai Trail, Ainapo Trail and Waimanu Valley Campground on the island of Hawai‘i effective today, April 12, 2006, following nearly a month of temporary closure due to several weeks of severe winter weather on all islands.
Permits will again be issued for Waimanu Valley campground sites by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) Hilo district office.
“We thank the public for their patience during the past month when it was necessary for use to close these remote areas out of concern for public safety,” said Peter Young, DLNR Chairperson.
"The unusual period of severe rain, flash floods and even landslides in some areas, has highlighted how important it is for the public to heed warnings to avoid trails or streams during stormy conditions," said Young. “These warnings are to protect life, limb and property, and are for your benefit,” he said.
For camping reservations contact the Hilo DOFAW office at (808) 974-4221.
