DLNR Holds Public Information Meeting
On Wai`anapanapa State Park Plans

HANA— The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will hold a public information meeting at 5:30 p.m., Thursday, May 18, at Hana High and Elementary School Cafeteria, 4111 Hana Highway, to discuss the master plan and draft environmental impact statement (DEIS) for Wai‘anapanapa State Park.

"We are seeking public input on the proposed future improvements and protection of the area’s natural and cultural resources. In addition, DLNR staff will discuss the environmental review process. We encourage public participation in this process," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

The draft environmental impact statement will be available in advance for public review at the Hana and Kahului libraries.

Written comments may be submitted at the meeting, sent via mail to: Lauren Tanaka, DLNR Division of State Parks, P.O. Box 621, Honolulu, HI 96809; sent via e-mail to: Lauren.A.Tanaka@hawaii.gov; or sent by fax to (808) 587-0311.

Requests for special accommodations should be made at least 7 days prior to the meeting date by contacting Wilson Okamoto Corporation at (808) 946-2277.

Wai’anapanapa State Park covers 122 acres, and is located 52.8 miles east of Kahului Airport. Its remote, wild, low-cliffed volcanic coastline offers solitude and respite from urban life.
The park offers lodging, camping, picnicking, shore fishing and hardy family hiking along an ancient Hawaiian coastal trail which leads to Hana.
The park offers an excellent opportunity to study a seabird colony and anchialine pools. Other features include a native hala forest, a cave associated with the legend of King Ka'akea and his beautiful wife Popu-'alaea, a heiau (religious site), a natural stone arch, sea stacks, blow holes and a small black-sand beach.
