DLNR To Hold Public Forum On
Waialea Park and Marine Conservation District

HILO — Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Enforcement, Aquatic Resources and Parks staff will hold a public information forum, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 6, 2006 at the Waialea Bay State Park, part of Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area in North Hawaii District.

“These public forums are an opportunity for us to share with the public our current management rules and regulations for the state park, and for the Waialea Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD). We will also provide information on endangered species and saltwater sports fishing matters,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

Waialea Bay MLCD was established in 1985 and comprises 35 acres. It is located in the southern portion of Kawaihae Bay, on the western coast of Hawai‘i. The MLCD extends from the high-water mark seaward to a line from the point immediately north of Ohai Point to Kanekanaka Point.

The diversity of marine life in Waialea is among the best in all of Kawaihae Bay, which makes it a popular site for snorkel and SCUBA activities.

For more information, contact Officer Verl Nakama at the North Hawaii DOCARE District Office, phone (808) 887-6196.
