KIHEI, MAUI – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to attend an information meeting about the Kihei boat ramp dredging project, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24. The meeting will be held at Kihei Elementary School cafeteria, 250 East Lipoa Street. “We are planning to dredge the Kihei boat ramp basin to improve the navigability of the harbor, by removing approximately 4,000 to 5,000 cubic yards of silted sand,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “The last dredging was in 1999. This project will benefit the recreational and commercial tour boats which support South Maui tourism, and local fishermen. This boat ramp basin maintenance project is currently in the design and permitting stage by DLNR’s consultant firm Oceanit. “These improvements are part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s ongoing efforts to upgrade our state small boat harbors and to ensure accessibility, safety, and comfort of all residents and visitors who use the boating facilities,” said DLNR chairperson Peter Young. DLNR has sent meeting notices to the Kihei Community Association, Maui County council members and Maui legislators. Any person requiring special assistance (i.e. large print material, sign language interpreters etc.) is asked to contact Ed Underwood at the Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, (808) 587-1967 by October 19, 2006. # # # For more information media contact |
