HONOLULU— The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) closed Sand Island State Recreation Area today while police investigated the theft of copper electrical wires and damage to the electrical system that powers the parks’ sewage pumping system. Thieves broke into an electrical transformer in one of the park’s restrooms and removed all the electrical wiring and extensively damaged the transformer system in the process. Wire was removed from the underground line from the transformer to the sewage pumping station in the park. That station pumps sewage from the park to the adjacent sewage treatment plant. “Because of the amount of damage to the park’s sewage pumping station, the transformer and theft of the electrical wires, we are unable to pump sewage from the park’s 6 restrooms. As a result we have closed the park until we are able to fully assess the damage, determine the cost, and make needed repairs,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. At this time it is not known when the park will be able to reopen. Persons holding camping permits for this weekend should call the State Parks office permit line at 587-0300. # # #
