DLNR Announces New Season Opening For
Rainbow Trout Fishing At Koke'e Public Fishing Area

HONOLULU – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) announces an open fishing season for rainbow trout in the Koke‘e Public Fishing Area, Kaua‘i, beginning on Saturday, June 16, 2007.

Anglers may fish between 5:30 a.m. and 6:45 p.m., daily, from June 16 to July 1, 2007. Thereafter, until July 29, 2007 anglers may fish only on Saturdays, Sundays and State holidays.

“Historically, fishing for rainbow trout occurred in August of each year, but starting this year the opening will be in June to coincide with Hawai‘i’s year-round public school schedule,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

“Families will benefit from the early opening since fishing for trout at Koke‘e is always a popular family activity,” he said.

Anglers fishing in the Pu‘u Lua Reservoir will have a chance to catch more than 8,000 stocked trout, which should weigh one pound by opening day, Young said.

The largest trout caught during the opening weekend in August 2006 was over 19 inches in length and weighed in at 4 lb. 5 oz.

Anglers must have a valid State of Hawai‘i freshwater game fishing license, which can be obtained at DLNR, at fishing supply stores, licensed agents, or purchased online at http://www.ehawaiigov.org/dlnr/fish/exe/fresh_main_page.cgi .

The daily bag limit is seven (7) rainbow trout per licensed angler. Anglers shall fish will only one pole and line, or one line with one lure or one baited hook attached to one line. The use of treble hooks is prohibited.

The complete provisions for fishing for rainbow trout in Koke‘e are in Chapter 13-64, Hawai‘i Administrative Rules, and can be found on the DLNR website at http://www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar, or by calling any Division of Aquatic Resources office.

Anglers should be aware that a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended for driving to the main fishing areas, particularly Pu‘u Lua Reservoir, the streams and the ditch systems.

All anglers are required to check in and out at established "check-in stations," as follows:

(1) Pu‘u Lua Reservoir while fishing at the reservoir;

(2) Koke‘e Park headquarters for the Koke‘e streams and ditch system and access through Camp Ten and Halemanu roads.

For further information or a current list of license agents, call DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources on O‘ahu at 832-5009 or the Lihu‘e Aquatic Resources office at (808) 274-3344.
