KIHEI – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to attend an informational meeting about its improvement project for the Kihei boat ramp, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 17, at Kihei Elementary School cafeteria, 250 East Lipoa Street. “We are planning to dredge the Kihei boat ramp basin to improve the navigability of the harbor, by removing approximately 4,000 to 5,000 cubic yards of silted sand,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. The last dredging was in 1999. “This meeting is to address comments received from our public meeting last October, and to let the boaters know we plan to go out to bid at the end of January,” Young said. “This project will benefit the recreational and commercial tour boats which support South Maui tourism, and local fishermen. It is part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s ongoing efforts to upgrade our state small boat harbors and to ensure accessibility, safety, and comfort of all residents and visitors who use the boating facilities,” he said. This boat ramp basin maintenance project is currently in the design and permitting stage by DLNR’s consultant firm Oceanit. The design is being finalized and the project will go out to bid by the end of January. The Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation is planning to begin construction this summer, and work is expected to take three months. Any person requiring special assistance (i.e. large print material, sign language interpreters etc.) is asked to contact Wesley Choi at (808) 216-5571 or Miles Lopes at (808) 357-1889. # # #
