WAILUKU, MAUI – The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to attend an information meeting at which it will give an update on its project to dredge the Mala Boat ramp. The meeting will take place from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28 at Lahaina Intermediate School, 871 Lahainaluna Road. Presentations will be made by DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, Engineering Division, and consultant firm Oceanit. "We are planning to dredge the Mala boat ramp basin to improve the navigability of the harbor, by removing approximately 3,300 cubic yards of silted sand,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. The last dredging was in 1999. The project will be put out for bid in April 2007. “These improvements are part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s ongoing efforts to upgrade our state small boat harbors and to ensure accessibility, safety, and comfort of all residents and visitors who use the boating facilities,” said Young. Mala Wharf and Boat Ramp is located approximately one mile north of Lahaina on the west coast of Maui. It features two ramps, two loading docks, a vessel washdown, and restrooms and shower. # # #
