HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (OCCL) is offering free coastal land use workshops for landowners, planners, regulators and developers, developers and the general public. “These workshops will cover a range of important topics concerning coastal development,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “This includes understanding state shoreline certifications, landscaping, dune restoration, beach nourishment, emergency erosion control, hazard mitigation, county shoreline setbacks, jurisdictions, and more,” Young said. Dolan Eversole, a University of Hawai‘i, Sea Grant coastal geologist and workshop coordinator added, “With the recent release of projections for global climate and sea-level change, it is critical we assess our coastal hazard zones and begin to develop a plan for dealing with the projected change in the shoreline. At the same time we are undergoing tremendous development pressure in these areas. We need to be proactive about dealing with potential coastal hazards and land use problems in these areas in order to protect Hawai‘i’s valuable coastal resources.” A workshop will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday March 2, at Maui Community College, 310 Ka‘ahumanu Ave., in Laulima building room 105 in Kahului. Another workshop is being scheduled from 4-6 p.m. on Friday March 9 on Kaua‘i at the Kaua‘i Convention Hall (Kaua‘i Ballroom) 4191 Hardy St., in Lihu‘e. Future workshops are being planned in Hilo, Kona, Honolulu and Moloka‘i. Reservations or RSVP are not required.
