DLNR To Hold Public Information Meeting On
Ma'alaea Small Boat Harbor Sewage Pump-out Project

MA‘ALAEA -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) invites the public to attend an information meeting regarding the proposed sewage pump-out project for the Ma‘alaea small boat harbor.

The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, at the harbor master’s office (Old Sea Flight Building) on the south mole of the Ma‘alaea small boat harbor. Potential users of this system are encouraged to attend.

"DLNR secured $2.6 million in the 2006 legislative session for the construction of multiple sewage pump-outs at the harbor. The project will provide the necessary facilities to properly dispose of vessel sewage which will reduce the amount currently being disposed of in the ocean," said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson.

The project, once completed, will provide a public facility to serve both the harbor tenants and any commercial or recreational vessel that wishes to use the pump out stations.

At this time there are no pump-out facilities at the harbor and vessels currently dispose of their sewage at sea, as allowed by law, or have it pumped out by a private pump truck.

Any person requiring special assistance (i.e. large print material, sign language interpreters etc.) is asked to contact Wesley Choi at (808) 243-5824 or Nick Giaconi at (808) 243-5818.

The Ma‘alaea Small Boat Harbor is located on the west coast of Maui and services both recreational and commercial boaters. Its facilities include 30 berths, 61 moorings, harbor office, dry dock and boat ramp. The DLNR Boating Division also leases land to house a restaurant and boat club.
