HONOLULU -- This weekend, as part of “Earth Month in the Ala Wai - 2007,” the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is partnering with county and federal agencies on weekend activities ranging from stream. and park cleanups to fish stocking and trail repairs.
“This is a good opportunity for people to learn about, and participate in activities that help the environment,” said Peter Young, DLNR chairperson. “From helping to care for a forest trail, to cleaning streams and roadsides, to helping stock fish, each one of us can help Hawaii be a cleaner, healthier place to live.”
DLNR is sponsoring two participatory activities:
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Makiki WAI Trail Improvement, Makiki forest reserve.
Volunteers who enjoy outdoors hands-on work can help to maintain a restored segment of the Makiki forest that was cleared and replanted with native Hawaiian plants and enhanced with interactive watershed educational displays and signs. Volunteers can help work on the soon-to-open new Makiki valley trail; help with fencing work, and weeding around native plants. Bathrooms and drinking water are near by. Families are welcome but young children must be well supervised. Bring long-sleeved shirt and pants, insect repellent, water, lunch or a snack, gloves and good shoes. Meet at the DLNR Makiki Forestry baseyard just above the new Hawaii Nature Center building. For information call 973-9782.
10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Watershed and reef displays; Moi fish stocking, behind Waikiki Aquarium.
The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources Anuenue Fishery Research Center has arranged to let youth groups assist in the release of hatchery raised juvenile moi into the Waikiki marine life conservation district. Meet along the sea wall behind Waikiki Aquarium. Moi release will begin at 11 a.m. and go until all fish are released.
The following organizations will provide education and information about marine resources, and preventing water pollution in the ocean:
DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources: Moi Stock Enhancement Project, Ulua-Papio Tagging Project, Hawaii Marine Reef ‘Got Fish!’ Project, Aquatic Invasive Species Project “Habitattitude”
University of Hawaii at Manoa-Marine Option Program.
