Labor Day Weekend Reminder From DLNR On Rules
For Public Use of Ka'ena Point State Park

HONOLULU — With the Labor Day weekend approaching, Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is reminding the public about state laws in place to protect natural resources and public safety at Ka‘ena Point State Park.

“In Hawai‘i our year-round good weather allows enjoyment of our beaches, parks, forests and other wilderness areas. We encourage everyone to experience these natural areas, while remembering rules are in place to protect these places, and the public, from injury or damage,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR interim chairperson.

“Ka‘ena Point State Park is a very popular location for outdoor activities on holidays, so we are making sure that the public knows what is, and what is not, allowed so they can be prepared,” said Thielen.

Over the Labor Day weekend, as part of normal enforcement patrols, DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officers will be monitoring these, and other state areas to ensure public safety and compliance with applicable rules.

Signs stating park rules have been posted at the Mokuleia, Keawaula and Makua sections of Kaena Point State Park.

State Park rules state:

Overnight camping is prohibited within all areas of Ka‘ena Point State park, including the Makua section. Camping is defined as “remaining within a state park or on unencumbered state land while in possession of a sleeping bag, tent, tarpaulin, or other camping paraphernalia from one hour after sunset until sunrise.”

Camping is allowed only by permit at designated state parks or forest areas. Camping is not permitted on other state unencumbered lands.

Driving on the beach, and operating motorized vehicles off designated roads are also prohibited.

Vehicles may enter the park after the paved road, but must stay off vegetation and all beach areas. Vehicles may not park on the beach areas.

Consumption of alcohol is prohibited within all state parks. Alcohol consumption is also prohibited within state forest reserves, unencumbered state land and small boat harbors.

Ground and open fires are prohibited on all state beaches and state recreational areas.

Littering and dumping of trash are prohibited, as is removal of sand or rocks.

No animals are allowed in the park except for service animals. However, in the Ka‘ena Point Natural Area Reserve at the point, all animals are strictly prohibited, for protection of endangered wildlife there.

No commercial activities are permitted in the park. No golfing is allowed.

Park hours are as follows:

Makua section – gates will open from 2 p.m. Friday and close at 7 p.m. on September 3, Labor Day.
Keawaula section – 4 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
