-- Plans underway for state's first new small boat harbor in 30 years |
KAMUELA, HAWAI‘I -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will host an informational meeting regarding the proposed harbor improvement project for the Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor (South) on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Nutrition Center Annex of the Waimea Senior Center. The Waimea Senior Center is located at 67-1199 Mamalahoa Highway, in Kamuela. DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) will present both the conceptual plans currently in design, and also a summary of the Draft Environmental Assessment Report, which will be made public on October 23. The Kawaihae (South) improvement project proposes to construct a boat launch ramp with loading docks, a floating dock with mooring blocks, a comfort station with outdoor shower, a boat wash down area, and various parking areas. "This is the first new small boat harbor built by the state in nearly 30 years,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “We are pleased to develop this project to meet the growing recreational and commercial boating needs of the public in West Hawai‘i. At the same time, the Lingle-Aiona Administration remains committed to repairing, upgrading and properly maintaining existing small boat harbor facilities statewide." Potential future users of this harbor are encouraged to attend the meeting. Honokohau Small Boat Harbor, one of the last new state harbor facilities built in the islands, was completed in 1978. DOBOR currently operates and manages 21 harbors, 50 ramps, 2,122 moorings and berths and 19 piers across the state. The division works in close partnership with DLNR's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and the U.S. Coast Guard to make nearshore waters safe. The division is also responsible for registering all vessels in Hawaii which are not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard and for regulating and permitting surf meets, canoe and yachting regattas, ocean swimming events and other ocean events with the concurrence Any person requiring special assistance (i.e. large print material, sign language interpreters etc.) is asked to contact Sharon Nekoba on O‘ahu at (808) 587-3250 or email her at Sharon.H.Nekoba@hawaii.gov
