KAMUELA, HAWAI‘I -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will host a follow-up informational meeting regarding the proposed harbor improvement project for the Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor (South) on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, 5:30-7 p.m. at the Waimea Senior Center, 67-1199 Mamalahoa Highway, in Kamuela.. DLNR’s Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) will present new information regarding the conceptual plans for the state’s first new small boat harbor in 30 years which is currently in the design phase. "DLNR is having this third in a series of meetings because community support is very important to our facilities management. We thank the community for their input at the previous informational meetings on September 7 and October 24 for Kawaihae, and we are seeking ways to incorporate that feedback in design modifications,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “We want to ensure that the South Kawaihae Small Boat Harbor is constructed in the best interest of all those involved,” said Thielen. The Kawaihae (South) improvement project proposes to construct a boat launch ramp with loading docks, a floating dock with mooring blocks, a comfort station with outdoor shower, a boat wash down area, and various parking areas. Potential future users of this harbor are encouraged to attend the meeting. Any person requiring special assistance (i.e. large print material, sign language interpreters etc.) is asked to contact Sharon Nekoba on O‘ahu by phone at (808) 587-3250 or by e-mail at Sharon.H.Nekoba@hawaii.gov. DOBOR currently operates and manages 21 harbors, 50 ramps, 2,122 moorings and berths and 19 piers across the state. The division works in close partnership with DLNR's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and the U.S. Coast Guard to make nearshore waters safe. The division is also responsible for registering all vessels in Hawai‘i which are not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard and for regulating and permitting surf meets, canoe and yachting regattas, ocean swimming events and other ocean events with the concurrence
