HONOLULU -- The Department of Land and Natural Resources has begun construction work at the Wailoa River State Recreation Area on improvements to the existing comfort station. “Upgrading and enhancing our state parks statewide is a top priority for the Lingle-Aiona Administration,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “As stewards of our natural resources, DLNR is committed to making necessary improvements to ensure park facilities are safe, accessible and comfortable for residents and visitors.” The comfort station will be closed during construction; however six portable toilets will be provided. The park and pavilions will remain open during construction Construction at the comfort station will consist of demolition of the existing roof, installation of a new roof, lighting, and other building improvements. Project completion is expected by mid-February 2008, and will be done by contractor Site Engineering, at a cost of $156,221. Previous work completed during 2005 – 2006 at the park included accessibility improvements at the pavilion, parking lot, pathway, signage, and restroom improvements.
