HONOLULU – Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Chairperson, Laura H. Thielen has appointed a temporary transition team to manage the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) while a new State Historic Preservation Division Administrator is selected. Melanie Chinen has resigned her position as Administrator, effective December 7, 2007. The SHPD staff was informed of Chinen’s resignation and the subsequent temporary transition team appointment, at a staff meeting this afternoon. “I want to thank Melanie for her years of service with the Department, and her dedication to the mission of SHPD,” said Chair Thielen. The temporary transition team will be composed of Bryan Flower, Stanton Enomoto and Rowena Somerville. The team will be supported by the State Department of Human Resources Development and the DLNR IT/Data Processing Office. Flower currently serves as Branch Manager of the SHPD’s Architecture Branch. Enomoto previously worked with the DLNR Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission as well as the Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism. Enomoto currently works at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs and is being assigned to work under the direction of the DLNR Chair during this transition. Somerville is a Deputy Attorney General who works with the DLNR Kaho‘olawe Island Reserve Commission. “These individuals bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience which will ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day administration of the division,” said Chair Thielen. “In addition, I will personally be spending time at the SHPD Kapolei Office with the temporary transition team, assisting them in their management.” The Department also announced today that a Search Committee will be established to find a new administrator for the SHPD. The committee will be composed of community leaders with knowledge of the SHPD and its unique challenges.
