HILO - The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) will host an informational meeting, on Tuesday, December, 11, 2007, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the conference rooms of the State Office Building in Hilo, 75 Aupuni Street, to discuss boating issues in East Hawai‘i. The main topics of the meeting include thrill craft boundaries, parasailing activities and cruise ship tendering. “This meeting will enable the Department of Land and Natural Resources to provide a progress report on boating issues that are important to East Hawai‘i residents and to obtain public input on how we can continue to improve services to the boating community,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson. “It is helpful for us to know if we’re managing the resource in a way that encourages and facilitates public use and enjoyment of our waterways, while protecting our environment and ensuring public safety.” “The issues to be discussed have elicited strong interests from East Hawai‘i residents, and periodic meetings like this encourage open communication and keep people involved with the public process,” said Thielen. DOBOR operates and manages 21 harbors, 50 ramps, 2,122 moorings and berths and 19 piers across the state. The division works in close partnership with DLNR's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) and the U.S. Coast Guard to make nearshore waters safe. The division is also responsible for registering all vessels in Hawai‘i which are not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard and for regulating and permitting surf meets, canoe and yachting regattas, ocean swimming events and other ocean events with the concurrence of the U.S. Coast Guard.
