HONOLULU-- The Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve and La Perouse Bay today to the public as a safety precaution while the 706th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company from Schofield Barracks completes disposal of four pieces of unexploded ordnance. “The Army remains committed to ensuring the health and safety of the local community and the environment and stresses that munitions encountered by the public should never be touched or handled, but reported to the proper authorities,” said Lt. Col. Vi Strong, public affairs officer for the 8th Theater Sustainment Command. Makena Road at the Kanahena (also known as “Dumps”) parking lot was closed this morning and DLNR enforcement officers and Ahihi-Kinau reserve resource rangers will be at the road closure to inform members of the public. The closure will only be in place until the ordnance disposal is completed, then the road and areas will be reopened, approximately by mid-afternoon today. “We appreciate the expertise and support of the Army’s 706 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company to assist us in safely disposing of old unexploded ordnance that was recently discovered in the reserve,” said Laura H. Thielen, DLNR chairperson.
