HILO — The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR)will close its West Hawai‘i parks early on New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31, 2007. The Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area and Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area, including the Waialea Bay section, will close at 6:00 p.m. The Kekaha Kai State Park-Kaulana-Mahaiula and Maniniowali sections will close at 5:00 p.m. “We are closing the parks early to discourage use of fireworks, which is prohibited in state parks, and to protect the public and natural resources of the area,” said DLNR chairperson Laura H. Thielen. Normal park hours will resume on January 1, 2008 as follows: Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area - 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Kekaha Kai State Park - 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area - 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Parks and Recreation, County of Hawai‘i will take over from the DLNR State Parks Division, the responsibilities of maintaining and managing the Old Kona Airport Park, including the rental of the large pavilion, beach park area and picnic pavilions. Reservations for Old Kona Airport Park will now be handled by the Parks and Recreation Kona Permit Office located near the Kona Community Aquatic Center and Kekuaokalani Gym at 75-5530 Kuakini Highway, phone (808)327-3560). Office hours are Mondays - Fridays, excluding holidays, from 7:45 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. # # # For more information, media contact: |
