DOFAW Critical Habitat ExplainedThis site was developed by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) to provide information on the designation of critical habitat in Hawaii by the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS). Each island section in this site displays a map of the USFWS proposed critical habitat areas, and the summary of the proposed action taken from the Federal Register. We have also included DOFAW’s response to the USFWS’s proposal as they are developed. Please feel free to email us with comments or suggestions on this site. To submit comments to the US Fish & Wildlife Service, please refer to each island section and follow the links at the end of the summary.

The Earthjustice Legal Defense Fund successfully sued the US Fish & Wildlife Service and prompted the 9th District Circuit Court to order the USFWS to designate critical habitat in Hawaii.
