The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife announces the opening of archery hunting in the PUUANAHULU GAME MANAGEMENT AREA (GMA) beginning Saturday, March 5, 2005, and continuing on weekends and State Holidays through June 26, 2005.  The annual closure of the archery season in this GMA will be from July through February.  As provided in Title 13, Chapter 123, the Department hereby notifies the public of changes that have been made in the bag limits, conditions and restrictions for the hunt and the assessment of a permit application fee.  The following conditions and restrictions will apply for the hunt:

Background:

The hunting of rams will be allowed this year.  Only rams with horn lengths of 20 inches or more (measured from base to tip) may be legally harvested.  There will be no season limit for the harvest of polled and deformed horned rams in Puuanahulu GMA, and tags will not be required.  Hunters must leave the head and the scrotal sack attached to the carcass of all harvested rams for ID purposes.

Hunters will need to purchase a 2005 feral goat and/or feral ram tag to legally hunt in this area.  Feral goat and ram harvest tags will be available at the Division of Forestry and Wildlife offices and various hunting license agents in Kona.  A limit of two feral goat harvest tags and one ram harvest tag will be issued per hunter and will cost resident hunters $10 per tag and non-residents $25 per tag.  There will be no replacement cards issued.
