Forested watersheds provide us with nearly all of our state's fresh water.

Watershed Partnerships are voluntary alliances of public and private landowners committed to the common value of protecting large areas of forested watersheds for water recharge and other values.

More than 200,000 acres of important watershed areas in Hawai`i have been placed within these unique public-private partnerships

Presently eight successful watershed partnerships have been established covering thousands of acres and others are in the works:  East and West Maui watersheds (EMWP, WMMWP), Ko`olau watershed on Oahu (KMWP), Lana`i hale watershed (LWP) and East Moloka`i watershed (EMoWP), Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership, Ola`a Kilauea Partnership and the Kauai Watershed Partnership.  On the ground projects have focused on alien species control and fencing projects but presently the partnerships have limited funding.

Hawaii Association of Watershed Partnerships This newly formed association gives Watershed Partnerships new fundraising capacity. Click to read the Memmorandum of Understanding signed ( ) by Partnership Representatives and Governor Lingle on April 24th, 2003.
