ExhibitsNorthwest Hawaiian Islands Research Expedition 2000 From September 20th to October 20th, 2000 DLNR scientists and others took a close look at the coral reefs of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, reefs that make up nearly 70% of all of the coral reefs in the United States. Take a look at their findings. Coastal Erosion and Beach Loss in Hawaii Nearly 25% (17 miles) of Oahu's beaches have been lost or significantly narrowed since early this century, with greater losses reported on the island of Maui. Any shore with a sandy beach is susceptible to beach loss from erosion. Northwest Hawaiian Islands. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are a chain of small islands, atolls, submerged banks, and reefs stretching for more than 1,000 miles northwest beyond the main Hawaiian Islands. Hawaiian Streams.
