The
Department of Land and Natural Resources' Historic Preservation
Division has been producing its Historic Sites Calendars since 1984.
The theme for the calendar changes each year. In 1996, SHPD took a
retrospective look at 25 years of historic preservation in the
islands, depicting both architectural and historic sites. For 1998,
Wahi
Pana or "Traditional Cultural Places" was selected as the
topic.
For 1999, SHPD's Historic Sites Calendar featured the work of
1930s architect
Claude
Albon Stiehl, designer of the Church of the Crossroads, Sacred
Hearts Convent (now Hawai`i Baptist Academy) and other notable
projects in the islands.
The Historic Preservation Calendar for the year 2000 featured the
work of a dozen of Hawai`i's premiere photographers exhibiting
Cherished
Places in Hawai`i.
Petrogyphs served as the theme for the year 2001 calendar. The
etchings depicted in
Legacy
in Stone were left by the ancient Hawaiians for the preservation
and transfer of information and commemoration of people, places,
events, material culture, and life forms.
In 2002, SHPD explored
Hawai`i's
Historic Waterways, important sources of fresh water for the
ancient Hawaiians and Hawai`i residents today.
SHPD's calendars are available for review at public libraries statewide. A limited number of past calendars are still available for purchase.
