STATE CLOSES LAKE WILSON RECREATION AREA
IN PREPARATION FOR SALVINIA ERADICATION IN PARK

Effective today, Department of Land and Natural Resources has closed Lake Wilson State Recreation Area temporarily to public use for an indefinite period as the state prepares to commence its excavation work within the park this week.

"Closing the park is for the public's safety," said Peter T. Young, DLNR chairperson, "because it will be a short-term closure with long-term benefits.  The presence of heavy equipment, including excavators, dump trucks, boats and trailers, is hazardous, and total closure will assist our efforts to clean the lake of Salvinia in the shortest time possible."

City and County excavation equipment began extracting the Salvinia weed Monday at the City's extraction site off Wilikina Drive behind Kemoo by the Lake apartments.  Division of Aquatic Resources is providing boats and using floating booms to drag clumps of the weed to the extraction site for removal by truck to a nearby disposal site.
