Celebrating
Hawai‘i with My Family and Friends.
An annual student art exhibition
featuring works by over 90 of
Hawai‘i's best young artists from K-6.
Presented by the Hawai‘i State
Foundation on Culture and the Arts, in
partnership with the Department of
Education and the Hawai‘i Tourism
Association. On view through April
2014. Hawai‘i Convention Center,
Children's Courtyard.
Dance
The 2013
Asia Pacific Dance Festival will
feature visiting artists from Korea,
Taiwan and New Zealand, along with several
talented artists from Hawai‘i, including
Michael Pili Pang, Robert Cazimero, and
Vicky Holt Takamine. The festival offers
both traditional and contemporary dance
presented in classes for public and
university students, performance
activities and concerts, and a public
forum. Presented by a University of
Hawai‘i Outreach College/East-West Center
partnership. Scheduled July 8-26, 2013.

Lectures
Art Lunch at HiSAM: Traditional
Surfboard-Shaping and Sled
Carving.
Legendary waterman Tom "Pohaku" Stone
will share his knowledge of the ocean
and ancient Hawaiian water sports. A
professional surfer, Stone will discuss
his lifelong education in traditional
methods of shaping and preserving
watercraft using ancient practices.

Lunch at HiSAM: Kahi Ching: Creativity in the
Face of Adversity. Maoli artist
Kahi
Ching will talk about his
colorful and tumultuous journey from
childhood to present – his many careers,
struggles with dyslexia (including an
onslaught of mental issues/emotional
heartache), and finally finding success as
a full-time artist. Scheduled June 25,
from 12 noon-1 p.m. Hawai‘i State Art

Friday at HiSAM: Hawai‘i Youth
Symphony.
Enjoy popular and classical favorites with
a performance by the Hawai‘i Youth
Symphony. A part of the Alumni
Chamber Music Series, the evening will
feature a few musicians who performed in
the HYS as youth. Scheduled June
7 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The museum galleries
will be open until 8:45 p.m. Hawai‘i

‘Ulu‘ulu:
The Henry Ku‘ualoha Giugni Moving Image
Archive of Hawai‘i. Join Janel
Quirante, head archivist of the ‘Ulu‘ulu
program; Heather Giugni, outreach
consultant; and Chris Lee, project
director; as they discuss the program and
show how it can assist Hawai‘i artists,
artist groups, and arts & cultural
organizations that have documented and
recorded artistci and cultural activities
over the decades. Learn about basic care
and preservation challenges in Hawai‘i for
audiovisual materialsas well as resources
for digitization. Scheduled June 4, from

Second
Saturday at the Hawai‘i State Art
Museum: The Hawai‘i Craftsmen: Paper,
Clay and Wood. Release
your inner artist at HiSAM! We'll have
help on hand with experienced artists from
our island's own Hawai‘i
Craftsmen. Create your own small
clay or wood sculptures to take home and
treasure. Learn some tried and true
ceramic techniques, too, as you help build
a collaborative clay construction. Find
out how the professionals do it! Scheduled
June 8, art galleries open from 10 a.m.-4
p.m., with art activities scheduled from
11 a.m.-3 p.m. Hawai‘i State Art Museum,
250 S. Hotel St. Admission is free.

College: Pacific New Media offers
a wide variety of classes on digital
imaging & design; film, video &
multimedia; photography; social media; web
design and more. A few of the upcoming
classes include: Memoir: Image and
Word/Word and Image; Vision and Discovery:
Finding Your Artistic Voice; and Film
