48th Annual
Hawai‘i Regional Scholastic Art
Awards 2011
February 4, 2011 - March 31, 2011

This
exhibition, that featured art by local
students in grades 7-12, was a tribute to
the many hardworking public and private
school arts teachers who volunteer each
year to make this competition a reality.
The Scholastic
Art & Writing Awards Program
is the longest-running and most
prestigious student arts recognition
program in the United States. The
Scholastic Awards were established in 1923
by M.R. Robinson to encourage, foster, and
reward student creativity across the
country. This year marked the 48th year of
the Hawai‘i
Regional Scholastic Art Awards.
Approximately 1,500 entries were received
from middle and high schools statewide,
including public, private, home, and
charter schools. From those entries, 237
student works were chosen to be in the
exhibit. This is the fourth year that
HiSAM has hosted the exhibit. The most
outstanding works received the regional
Gold Key Awards and Silver Key Awards. Of
these finalists, five were nominated for
the American Vision Award, the highest
honor in the national competition. All
Gold Key Award artworks went on to
represent the Hawai‘i region in the
national judging held each April in New
York City.
The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture
and the Arts presented the Tadashi Sato
Living Art Scholarship to an
outstanding Hawai‘i student artist. The
scholarship was established by Keiko Sato
in honor of her late brother, Tadashi
Sato, was awarded to a high school senior
whose work in the competition best
exemplified Sato’s belief that emotional
and spiritual influences flow through the
artist creating “a living work of art.”
