A
selection of textile and fiber works
from the Art in Public Places
Collection. The exhibition showcased
work spanning several decades, with
a mix of styles, media, and
techniques expressive of both
tradition and innovation. This
exhibit was presented in conjunction
with the 11th Biennial Symposium of

He Alo A He
Alo: Face to Face, Visions
& Portraits of Hawai‘i
May 2, 2008 - September 2009
The
exhibition featured intimate works
of art that captured some of the
essence of our Hawai‘i community by
honoring the subjects of the
portraits and the work of the
artists. A few pieces included in
the exhibit, all from the Art in
Public Places Collection, were a
portrait of the late art patron,
Phyllis "Dobson" Hume Spalding by
Mexican artist Diego Rivera; a
formal portrait of Hawaiian Kumu
Hula Master Rosalie Lokalia
Montgomery by artist Willson Y.
Stamper; and a photographic portrait
of Madge Tennent.
Palolo Kids
and Friends
May 2, 2008 -
This
exhibit featured black and white
photographs of local children at
play in Palolo, a residential
neighborhood in Honolulu, made in
the mid-70s by Eric Yanagi and
Francis Haar. Thirty-five years
later, these black and white images
are now a window to a moment in time
when kids could be kids and friends
were forever.
45th Annual
Hawai‘i Region of the Scholastic
Art Awards 2008
February 1, 2008 - April 4, 2008
This
annual art exhibition is a national
recognition of the creative
excellence among Hawai‘i\'s public
and private school students in
grades 7-12. The local exhibition
honorws five American Award Winners,
100 Gold Key Award Winners, and 100
Silver Key Award Winners. A handful
of selected top award winners went
on to compete on the national level.
