The Special Enforcement Section is currently looking to hire Special Agents, investigator assistants, and other support staff.
The Department of Taxation is interested in hearing from persons with legal or accounting backgrounds; investigations backgrounds; tax experience; collection work history; security services; or other relevant skills.
The SES is comprised of Special Agents, investigator assistants, and other support staff. SES personnel are charged with investigating alleged complex and high-risk civil violations of Hawaii tax laws with a focus on the cash economy. The primary duty is to conduct civil investigations and agents may not conduct criminal investigations. Agents are required to competently analyze and apply Hawaii tax laws to the facts of a case, but may not render legal advice.
SES agents serve process and apply for and execute search warrants and writs of entry pursuant to law. SES agents; however, are not police officers and may not carry a firearm. Where the SES conducts fieldwork that may put agents or assistants at-risk, the SES's policy is to engage the police officers, or sheriffs where needed to assist the SES by controlling its working environment in the field.
